  • Walk through the ancient temples and ruins, each with its own layout and history
  • Take a long-tail boat around the island for river views of the temples
  • Try local food: riverside seafood, street food stalls, and traditional Thai dishes
  • Rent a bicycle to cover the historical park at your own pace
  • Stop at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum for context on what you’ve just seen

Why Ayutthaya Is UNESCO-listed?

Ayutthaya was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom after Sukhothai. Founded around 1350, it grew into a major centre of trade, diplomacy, religion, and royal power, before Burmese forces destroyed it in 1767.

The Historic City of Ayutthaya became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, because its ruins show the scale of the old capital. UNESCO’s listing points to:

  • Prang towers and large Buddhist monasteries
  • A planned city layout with a working canal system
  • Ayutthaya’s former role as a trading and diplomatic hub between East and West

That history is why Ayutthaya works so well as a day trip. You’re not just seeing individual temples, you’re seeing the remains of a former capital that shaped Thai art, architecture, city planning, and royal culture.

Is Ayutthaya Worth Visiting?

Yes. Ayutthaya gives you a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 80 km from Bangkok, several major temple ruins you can realistically see in one day, and river and countryside scenery you won’t find inside the city. That combination of history, distance, and scenery is why it’s a popular day trip choice.

Must-Visit Ayutthaya Temples

  • Wat Mahathat – The Tree-Root Buddha
The famous Buddha head wrapped in tree roots is more moving in person than photos suggest. Step quietly. The area around it is small. Beyond the icon, you’ll find crumbled prangs and galleries that hint at the city’s former symmetry. Go early for soft light and room to linger.
    Wat Mahathat
  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram – Sunset’s Favorite
This riverside temple is laid out symmetrically and looks its best at golden hour. As the sun drops, the red brick glows and long shadows stretch across the courtyards. If you can stay for sunset, this is the spot.
    Wat Chaiwatthanaram
  • Wat Yai Chai Mongkol- Rows of Buddhas & a Climb
Start here if you can. There’s a tall chedi you can climb, flanked by rows of saffron-robed Buddhas. It sets the tone for the day: calm, photogenic, and not too crowded first thing. The climb rewards you with a breeze and a view that helps you map out the rest of the day. Slip-on shoes make temple-hopping faster.
    Wat Yai Chai Mongkol
  • Wat Ratchaburana – Climb & Details

Opposite Wat Mahathat, this site has a short climb if you like heights, plus a closer look at stucco guardians and weathered carvings. Stand still for a moment and the small details emerge from the plaster. From the terrace, Ayutthaya’s grid of ruins stretches out below you.

  • Wat Phra Si Sanphet – The Royal Triple Chedis

Once part of the royal palace compound, three bell-shaped chedis stand in a row. Walk slowly around the base, since each angle frames a different view of sky, brick, and stupa. Next door, Viharn Phra Mongkhon Bophit holds a towering bronze Buddha.

  • Ayutthaya Historical Park: Spread-out ruins and lawns; consider bikes/e-scooters (hydrate, wear a hat).

What to Eat in Ayutthaya?

Ayutthaya is known for simple, satisfying local food. If you have time, try grilled river prawns, boat noodles, or roti sai mai. A private driver helps here, since you can stop at a restaurant without arranging transport again after lunch.

Keep lunch simple for a smoother day. Pick a practical restaurant near your temple route, especially if you’re travelling with children or older relatives.

Practical Tips for Your Ayutthaya Day Trip

We had an excellent experience with Go Thai Transport during our recent trip. We booked them for both a round-trip airport transfer and a full-day driver service, and everything was seamless from start to finish.
For the airport transfers, the driver was waiting for us exactly as scheduled (clear signage made it easy to find them), and the vehicle was clean, spacious, and comfortable for our group.
We also arranged a one-day driver for sightseeing, which was the highlight. Our driver was polite, professional, and navigated the traffic smoothly, allowing us to relax and enjoy the sights without worrying about logistics. It took so much stress out of our trip. If you are looking for reliable transportation in Thailand, I definitely recommend booking with them.

I had to go to airport with lot of luggage and was quite anxious, the driver came 1 hour before the time I asked for. The car suv was exactly as described in pictures received the night before. The driver was courteous, very helpful, took care of my luggage because I can't do it myself. Stayed with me until I registered my luggage. It was an excellent experience. I recommend this company to whoever is looking for good service and have peace of mind. Thank you for your exceptional and excellent experience.

Great service. Driver was at least 30 mins early, but without asking us to hurry - just to make sure we could leave earlier if we wanted to. He also made sure to help with all our luggage, and since we travelled with a child, that was very helpful. All in all a very smooth experience.

Service is fast, accurate, professional and personable.

An unexpected health emergency on our drive from Pattaya to Hua Hin required alot of support and flexibility from our driver but they assisted with zero hesitation and genuine concern. A 4 hour trip turn into 9ish but they accommodated without hesitation.

Thank you! We will be back!
